TomTom XXL 540TM 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition)

I bought the TomTom XL 540S a few weeks ago. This GPS is the brother of the TomTom XL 340. This GPS has only the biggest, brightest display "5.

I have mixed feelings about the GPS. There are many things I like, but there are little details that many functions and not found much in it that TomTom has decided not to work or has chosen to exclude. These small things are missing to get me absolutely crazy sometimes and I do not know if I can support or not. I can think about returning this GPS and Garmin or Magellan or time. I do not know yet. TomTom really hope that begins to address some of these issues.

Some of my pros vs cons are below, so I hope to help others who are trying to decide on a GPS.

Pros:

+ IQ Routes (TomTom uses historical data for highway speed by time of day and day of the week, so we can give the best possible way)
5 + Big Screen ", which is easy to see.
+ Very high speakers. (Preferences option volume to increase volume at the speed of the car if desired)
+ Acquition satellite is fast (less than 10 seconds for me). Shows usually about nine satellites.
Map + color can be changed.
+ Can you change the color of the car symbol in 3D mode
+ Auto Day / Night change the brightness and color.
+ Possibility of preparing a route with any game and destination coordinates.

+ Displays the current street in the bottom of the screen and the street next turn in the upper right corner.

Advanced Lane Guidance + shows on the road very well. An arrow with the track you need to be, and sometimes also shows a signal in 3D production. It's nice and big and stays on screen long enough to be seen so its clear to see where to go.

Bar + state can customize the way you like. Can be displayed horizontally or vertically. You can display the remaining time, remaining distance, current time, arrival time, speed and the speed limit, distance to your next turn, compass, etc..

+ TTS (Text to Speech) instructions are useful so you know where to go and also prepare for his next turn as well. For example, say something like: "After a Qurta miles turn right." So as you approach the street will say "Turn right on Main St. Then take the second left"

Pros:

- POI (Points of Interest) map displays the name of the POI, street or cross street, phone, city and state. But there are no street addresses! So I do not know the address or the street side of the POI is on, unless you call the place ahead of time and ask. All you need is a checkered flag is displayed on the street with TomTom say "you've reached your final destination." The model map of attractions Go screen has a "Details" button that displays the address, zip code and the cuisine of food, for example. TomTom has decided to remove this from this model have no idea.

- No autozoom enable / disable option (as in the Go model). You can manually zoom the map, but after about 5 seconds autozoom will kick in and bring it back to TomTom want you to see. It's very frustrating because I like to zoom in and out sometimes, so you can see the map, but TomTom does not allow me, after about 5 seconds. When I turn on the zoom level GPS TomTom have chosen is so bad that most of all the contours of the street around me completely disappeared from the screen. All I see is a bunch of names of streets, floating in the streets without a map displayed.

- Do not talk about that side of the street your destination is. (If you enter an address to a destination however, shows a small arrow on the map pointing to the left or right side of the street when you are approaching your destination. Together with a small checkered flag at the side of the street your destination is.)

- Change Preferences screen is 6 pages deep and has only one button to move foward to the next page. There is a back button. So if you accidentally pass the screen said I wanted to be to press foward 5 times to return to this page.

- No easy way to enter the lists as View as displaying text on the screen.

- See instructions via text, text and arrows to the list, in turn is only one way to small. In addition, there is no automatic scrolling. To view the new page after the next round will have to manually scroll through the list yourself.

- POI Map Screen in night mode displays text in black across the street, which is extremely difficult to see if you get too close to the screen.

- 3D mode during the day the brightness of the background map is not consistent across the screen. There are visible lines on the screen where you can see the brightness in several stages. To map the bottom of your brightest and then move up the screen is a little darker.

- You can not enter the street name until after he entered the city. Its bad news if you know the street but not sure of the city. You should be able to find the street in any city near you or near the city you entered (if incorrect).

- TTS (Text to Speech) for street names sounds of several words at times imperceptible.
- TTS pronounces some words and bad roads.
- You can not change the color of the car symbol in 2D mode.
- You can search for restaurants by cuisine.
- No microSD card slot for expansion. The room is very tight, with only 2 GB of internal flash memory. After removal of all voices except the voice of Susan's computer and eliminate most of the symbols of the car. Still only has 105 MB of free space left.
- Only compatible with USB 1.1 transfers. So when you install the maps or backup performance very slow.

Various: gps on my BCM4750 chipset is a GL2 (Global Locate 2), CPU speed is 266MHz. 64 MB of RAM.
